Ascot Vale Leisure Centre Sauna #2
On the 21 July 2026 the heating unit located in sauna 2 at the Ascot Vale Leisure Centre caught fire while in use.
The investigation identified that the cause of the heating unit catching fire was eucalyptus oil being poured over the heating unit. Eucalyptus oil is highly flammable. Patrons using the sauna are prohibited from using eucalyptus oil due to safety implications.
Moonee Valley City Council has determined that the installation costs for replacement of the sauna heating unit for sauna 2, which was required as a result of patron behaviour, did not represent best value to ratepayers.
Planning for projects at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre continues to progress. When the planning is complete and the details of the scope of project works is known, we will communicate this information with stakeholders.
