Moonee Valley Leisure Centres commitment to providing inclusive services and culturally safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ community members.
In recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) on 17 May, Moonee Valley Leisure Centres reaffirm our commitment to inclusive services and culturally safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ community members, supported through programs, training and inclusive practices across our leisure facilities.
We are committed to fostering welcoming, safe and inclusive environments for people of all gender identities and expressions.
IDAHOBIT day strives to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ rights, and in doing so foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow people.
Let’s take a moment to understand why this commitment is important.
1. Ensuring equitable access to health and wellbeing services
Leisure centres play a critical role in physical activity, mental wellbeing and social connection. LGBTQIA+ people can experience higher barriers to participation due to past discrimination, fear of exclusion or a lack of safe spaces. By openly reaffirming inclusive and culturally safe practices, Moonee Valley Leisure Centres help ensure everyone can access services without fear, discomfort or marginalisation, supporting better health outcomes across the community.
2. Creating environments where people feel safe and respected
Clear commitments, supported by staff training and inclusive practices, help create environments where people of all gender identities and expressions feel seen, respected and safe. This reduces the risk of harm, exclusion or negative experiences for LGBTQIA+ patrons.
3. Aligning with community demographics and needs
With a higher proportion of residents in Moonee Valley identifying as LGBTQIA+ than the Victorian average, reaffirming this commitment reflects the true diversity of the local community. Approximately 13% of people in Moonee Valley identify as LGBTQIA+, compared with 11% across Victoria. This demonstrates that services are designed to respond to local needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, strengthening service relevance, participation and community trust.
4. Supporting staff confidence and service quality
Programs, training and inclusive practices equip staff with the skills and confidence to provide respectful, appropriate service. This leads to:
- more consistent customer experiences
- reduced risk of misunderstanding or unintentional discrimination
- greater confidence for staff when supporting diverse community members.
Well-trained staff are central to delivering genuinely inclusive services.
