World Drowning Prevention Day 2023

July 25 is World Drowning Prevention Day.

Globally, 236,000 people die each year from drowning, with 90% of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries.

Drowning can affect anybody in any body of water, regardless of whether they can swim or not, from lakes and oceans, through to shallow waters in a bath or even from water inhalation.

For 2023, The World Health Organization has focused on raising awareness on the six evidence-based, low-cost drowning interventions that can be used to drastically reduce the risk of drowning:

  • Train bystanders in safe rescue and resuscitation
  • Set and enforce safe boating, shipping and ferry regulations
  • Improve flood risk management locally and nationally
  • install barriers controlling access to water
  • provide safe places away from water for pre-school children, with capable child care,
  • teach school-age children basic swimming, water safety and safe rescue skills.

As a Leisure centre, we have a commitment to ensure we are adhering to a variety of water safety standards and regulations in order to keep our venues safe for ALL our patrons, so they can feel safe and confident around water.

The focus for World Drowning Prevention Day 2023 is Anyone can drown, no one should. Royal Life Saving Australia have provided a series of preventative measures that people of all ages should consider to ensure that they are being safe around water:

  • Become a pool lifeguard
  • Become a swim teacher
  • Check your home pool gate and fencing
  • Enrol your child in swimming lessons
  • Learn CPR
  • Supervise children around any body of water – no matter how large or small.
  • Wear a lifejacket
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
