The life-changing impact of the AAA program on my teaching

We are proud to offer programs that foster growth, inclusivity and a sense of community and the Access All Abilities (AAA) Swim and Social program is a shining example of this commitment.

Designed to create an engaging, supportive environment for adult participants of all abilities, this program not only builds swimming skills but also encourages connection and personal growth for both participants and staff.

Our instructors, like Thomas Fletcher, a swim instructor at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre and Keilor East Leisure Centre, are at the heart of what makes AAA so special.

When asked about the program Thomas says, “It’s safe to say that the AAA program has become one of my favourite aspects of the job. As a swim instructor, it contains all the best parts of teaching. Eager students, a fun and light atmosphere and dedicated staff. Creating easily one of the coolest programs we offer.

“I was one of the lucky instructors there at the start, being signed up for the pre-program training within my first month of teaching. Like anyone in that period, I was unsure of my own abilities as a teacher. I’ve never really taught before, so this was entirely out of my comfort zone. I was – and still am – deeply afraid of failing my students, swimming is so incredibly important so I wanted to do the best job a person with my swimming experience could manage.

“To add to this fear, AAA seemed daunting at first; how could I be confident with such a diverse group of adults if I couldn’t yet manage my class of kids? But now I know with certainty that I would not be half as good of a swim teacher if it weren’t for AAA,” Thomas explained.

Thomas reflects further stating, “Maybe it’s the flexibility of the program, within those first few months I think I learned as much as the participants. Maybe it’s the friendly faces both in and out of the pool, I have never felt more supported in any other line of work. Or maybe, it could be because that’s just how AAA is. It fosters growth within you, no matter which side of the class you stand.

“Working with people of all abilities, backgrounds and perspectives has been invaluable. AAA isn’t just about swimming, it’s about learning, laughing and connecting with others in a meaningful way.

“The program supported me during some of my toughest times, becoming a genuine highlight of my week. It has made me not just a better instructor but a happier, more fulfilled person. Watching friendships blossom in AAA, including my own, has been a privilege and I look forward to seeing the program continue to thrive. Long live AAA,” Thomas concluded.
