Why do we pause swimming lessons in winter?

Why do we pause swimming lessons in winter?

As winter rolls in, something curious happens. Kids rug up and head to outdoor sports training and practice. Weekend mornings are spent on cold sidelines watching netball, soccer, football or hockey. Early starts, muddy fields, frosty fingers.

But when it comes to swimming lessons? Many families hit pause.

There’s a long-standing belief that swimming is a ‘summer activity’, something to do when the weather is hot and summer holidays are near. Winter swimming lessons, on the other hand, are often associated with perceptions that:

  • “It’s too cold to swim.”
  • “The kids won’t enjoy swimming lessons in winter.”
  • “We’ll just start again in summer.”
  • “A few months off won’t make a difference.”

But here’s the truth: Swimming isn’t seasonal; it’s an essential year-round skill. And every swimming lesson counts towards real progression, even in winter.

Swimming is a life skill, and relies on:

  • Consistency
  • Repetition
  • Progression over time

When children take extended breaks from lessons, their skills fade. Confidence drops. Progress slows. In many cases, swimmers return feeling like they’ve gone backwards.

In contrast, children who continue lessons through winter often:

  • Retain and strengthen skills
  • Build resilience and confidence
  • Progress faster when summer arrives
  • Feel more comfortable and capable in the water year-round

Families who continue swimming through winter often notice the difference when summer returns, leading to significant positive benefits:

  • Less anxiety around water
  • Stronger technique and stamina
  • More confidence at beaches, pools and waterways
  • Safer decision-making around water

Instead of ‘catching up’, swimmers are ready for year-round fun, excitement and safety in all types of waterways.
